Life as an Aspiring Med Student: My Journey Through IB and High School Hostel Life

As an aspiring medical student, my life is a whirlwind of textbooks, deadlines, and dreams of studying in the UK. The path to medicine is known to be challenging, but combining it with the IB Diploma Programme (IBDP) and living in a high school hostel adds layers of complexity, growth, and unique experiences.

The IBDP is renowned for its rigorous academic curriculum, and I’ve found this to be true every step of the way. Balancing subjects like Biology, Chemistry, and Mathematics while writing extended essays and managing CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) activities pushes me to my limits. However, I know this challenge is preparing me for the demanding nature of medical school.

Every day, my vision of walking the historic corridors of a UK university keeps me motivated, even when the workload feels overwhelming.

Living in a high school hostel adds another dimension to my journey. Hostel life teaches you independence in ways that few other experiences can. The hostel environment is a crash course in adulting, from managing my schedule to ensuring I eat correctly and get enough rest. It’s also a melting pot of cultures and personalities, so there’s never a dull moment. While the social aspect is enriching, the sense of camaraderie among peers, all of us working towards our goals, makes hostel life truly special.

Balancing my academic responsibilities with hostel life isn’t always easy. There are days when the pressure of impending exams, IB assignments, and the looming university applications feels too much. However, I’ve learned the importance of time management and self-care. Whether taking a break to chat with friends, going for a walk, or indulging in a hobby, these small acts keep me grounded.

My journey as an aspiring med student is one of hard work, dedication, and hope. Every late-night study session and every hostel gathering contributes to the person I’m becoming—someone who is not just academically prepared, but also resilient, empathetic, and ready to make a difference in the world of medicine.
